New Hampshire Must Improve Care for Mentally Ill After Suit
New Hampshire Attorney General Joseph Foster Attorney General Joseph Foster announced that New Hampshire must expand services for people who are severely mentally ill in order to settle a lawsuit that charged the state needlessly confined people in mental wards or hospitals because it lacked community treatment options.

Olmstead Enfrocement: DOJ Findings Letter Concludes Rhode Island is Violating Title II of the ADA
United States Department of Justice The Department of Justice (DOJ) issued a statewide Findings Letter in January 2014 concluding that the State of Rhode Island is violating Title II of the ADA by unjustifiably and unnecessarily segregating persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD) in its day activity service system, which includes sheltered workshops and facility-based day programs, instead of providing such persons the opportunity to receive integrated supported employment and integrated day services that would enable them to interact with non-disabled individuals to the fullest extent possible.
 
 
Disabled Seymour Connecticut Resident Fighting for ADA Compliance
Joseph A. Luciano To push the town of Seymour, Connecticut into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), disabled resident Joseph A. Luciano, 75, filed a case with the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities. "I'm really disappointed in this town, and I'm not the only one" who is affected by obstructed sidewalks and curb cuts after a snowfall, he said.

FCC Requests Comments on Closed Captioning of Video Clips
Federal Communications Commission The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is seeking comments on the current state of captioning of IP-delivered video clips. What portion of IP-delivered video clips generally, and IP-delivered news clips specifically, are captioned? Has the availability of captioned versions of such clips been increasing? What is the quality of the captioning on IP-delivered video clips. The deadline to submit comments is January 27, 2014.

U.S. Access Board Releases Final Report on Accessibility Standards for Medical Equipment
U.S. Access Board LogoThe U.S. Access Board has released its final report on accessibility standards for medical diagnostic equipment, such as examination tables, scales, and x-ray machines. These standards will be used to make sure that medical equipment is accessible and usable by people with disabilities.
 
 
Final Rule Makes Changes to Regulations Implementing Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act

U.S. Department of Labor Seal The U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) announced a Final Rule that makes changes to the regulations implementing Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended (Section 503) at 41 CFR Part 60-741. You can view the Final Rule on the OFCCP Web site, and on the Federal Register Web site, when published. Additional information about the Final Rule is provided in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

 

43.7 Million Americans experienced mental illness in 2012

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Nearly one in five American adults, or 43.7 million people, experienced a diagnosable mental illness in 2012 according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The findings also shed light on mental health issues among young people. According to the report, 2.2 million youth aged 12 to 17 (9.1 percent of this population) experienced a major depressive episode in 2012.

Your Support is Needed to Provide Accessible Schools in Ghana 
Sefakor Komabu Pomeyie Sefakor Komabu Pomeyie, Vermont Center for Independent Living's (VCIL) policy intern from 2013, is seeking support to help retrofit ten schools in Ghana to make them more accessible to students with disabilities. By installing ramps and focusing on principles of universal design at ten schools in the the Nsawam-Adoagyiri municipality, more than 10,000 school children will have greater access to an education.
